The elementary art program at Bowles Elementary provides 60 minutes of instruction every week to students in Grades 1-5. Kindergarten students receive 30 minutes of art instruction every week. Throughout the school year each student will create two and three-dimensional artworks, use and learn appropriate art vocabulary, and analyze artwork while focusing on art history. Importance is placed on self-expression, creativity, and positive self-concept. Lessons are aligned with the Rockwood Fine Arts Curriculum and the Show-Me Standards.
The Elements of Design: line, value, shape, form, texture, and space are taught throughout the year. Each student attains these concepts through an integrated approach involving art production, art history, art criticism and aesthetic awareness. Students will become familiar with the art and life of several artists including: Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Faith Ringgold, Georgia O’Keefe, and Maria Martinez, to name a few. In addition, various cultures, time periods and civilizations are intertwined into the curriculum including Native American, Ancient Egyptians, Medieval Times, Africa, and Mexico.
All grade levels use a variety of media and tools age appropriate. Some of these include clay, wire, collage, printmaking, metal tooling, paint and plaster.
Even though each grade level creates more than several projects throughout the school year sometimes it’s important to know that each art experience does not need to result in a "masterpiece." Sometimes it’s a good idea just to experiment with ideas without worrying about what the finished product will look like. As the year progresses at Bowles Elementary, each child continues to problem solve and build skills while "exercising" his or her creativity.
Art Room News
Happy spring! This time of year is very exciting for me and for our students. It is time for the Rockwood District Art Show. This year it will be held at LaSalle Springs Middle School on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday April 26th from noon until 3:30. LaSalle Springs is located at 3300 Highway 109 Wildwood, MO 63038. Art work will be displayed from grades pre-K to 12th grade. Please mark your calendars and stop by to see the amazing work students have created. Each year I select as much art work as possible to be in the art show. I try to select a few pieces from each project at each grade level to be represented. Unfortunately, due to limited space I am only allowed to display artwork that can fit on three display boards. To see what your student has been up to in art class please stop by Bowles and enjoy the ever changing artwork that is on display.
RESPECT THE POUCH
We are starting a new recycling program here at Bowles. We will be saving Capri Sun pouches. For every pouch Bowles will receive two cents. We will be able to cash in our pouches twice a year and use the money to make Bowles a better place. The recycled pouches are up cycled into new products such as pencil cases, backpacks, tote bags, purses, and many other items. For more information about the recycling program or purchasing products please visit:
