Tips for Reading Aloud

By: Reading Intervention Team

  • Choose a cozy or comfortable place where you and your child can both see the book.
  • Choose books that are of high interest for your child.  This will make reading and enjoyable experience for you and your child.
  • Share and talk about the title of the book.
  • Encourage your child to make predictions and to think about how the story relates to your child’s personal experiences.
  • While reading, pause and discuss the characters’ actions and feelings.
  • Stop occasionally to talk about what has happened up to that point in the story.
  • At the end of the story or book, ask your child to tell about his/her favorite part and share with your child your favorite part.
  • Sometimes it is fun to create a new or different ending to a story or to retell the story from a slightly different perspective or in a different setting.  Have fun sharing ideas with your child.

Reading aloud to your child each day can make a huge difference in your child’s reading success.
