T
he Drug-Free Coalition collaborates with the Rockwood School District to assess students’ experiences and perceptions about their lives. The Coalition will use this data to guide its work as it develops stronger connections with students, parents and community members to prevent and address unhealthy choices among youth.
Recent assessments include Rockwood's Spring 2011 Safety & Climate Survey, in which 14,500 students, parent and staff shared input on various aspects of alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, and a Search Institute: Behavior and Attitudes Survey administered to 2,570 students in grades 7-11 in November 2008.
What did Rockwood students say about their lives? The majority are making good choices, feeling good about themselves and reaching for their potential.
Some of their comments are cause for concern:
45% of 11th graders report consuming alcohol in past 30 days.
38% of these students have consumed alcohol three or more times in past 30 days,
getting drunk at least once in the past two weeks.
20% of 9th graders report consuming alcohol in the past 30 days.
12% of 7th- 11th grade students report using marijuana once or more in the past 12
months; 37% of 11th graders have done so.
33% of students report riding in a car with a driver who has consumed alcohol
17% of students are frequently depressed and/or have attempted suicide.
Some of our students report unfavorable conditions within their own communities:
75% of 11th graders and 13% of 7th graders report attending parties where peers are drinking alcohol.
27% of students report being victims of physical abuse by someone n their family or someone living with them.
