AFJROTC

Welcome to Marquette High School's Air Force Junior ROTC Web Page. The Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFJROTC) program is sponsored by the Rockwood School District and the United States Air Force, and it may be used as a Practical Arts or Elective credit towards high school graduation requirements. Additionally, each year of successful completion of AFJROTC also qualifies each student for two (2) elective college credits through the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS). The AFJROTC program's curriculum is divided into Aerospace Science (40%), Leadership Education (40%), and Wellness and Fitness (20%). AFJROTC has been approved for accreditation by the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation (CITA) and students may earn up to 16 elective college credit hours for completing various AFJROTC sponsored programs/courses. Returning AFJROTC students are also eligible for half a high school academic credit towards graduation by completing a Summer Leadership School (SLS).

Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) was founded in 1911 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, by Army Lieutenant Edgar R. Steevers. He wanted to teach young men the advantages of having a strong body and mind, the value of self-control, and the importance of community service. Then five years later, the National Defense Act of 1916 authorized a junior course for high schools and the Army was the first military service to implement JROTC. Forty-eight (48) years later, Public Law 88-647, commonly known as the ROTC Vitalization Act of 1964, directed the Secretaries of each military service to establish and maintain JROTC units for their respective services.
