Homework Policy
Since reading is the cornerstone of all we do as learners, we ask first graders to read or be read to at least 15 minutes each day. Every Monday, a homework packet goes home with first grade students. The packet is due back the following Friday. The homework activities relate to the topics we're covering in class that week. Please help your child complete the work. This not only will help him/her practice newly learned skills, it also will keep you apprised of what we're doing at school. From time to time, your child will also bring home Everyday Math Home Links. These usually are due back the following day. Sometimes students do not complete their class work. If this should happen, your child will bring it home with a note attached to the unfinished work. Please help your child complete the work and return it to school the next day.
Communication
If for any reason you need to send a note to us, please place it in your child's Viking Folder. Tell your child to put it in the teacher's basket when he/she gets to school. We do remind children to put any notes or anything for us in the basket. Also, please make sure to send a note to school for any change in your child's regular daily routine. This includes a change in bus number, change in bus stop, if they are riding a different bus home with a friend, or any changes on our early dismissal days. Please also inform us of any changes in your child's Adventure Club schedule in addition to informing Adventure Club. We will only follow written directions from parents; therefore, it is necessary to inform us directly.
Snacks
Your child may bring in a snack to eat during the afternoon. Since students consume their snacks in the classroom, we ask that the food you send be healthy and not too messy to eat or clean up.
Other teacher tips
Please make certain your child gets a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast. First graders are creating important pathways in their brains that require both of these components.
