During all sessions of Adventure Club (Before School, After School, and Kindergarten), developmentally and age appropriate activities are planned. These activities are relevant, and they accurately reflect the background and culture of the children enrolled. The Adventure Club rooms or areas are set up in centers, and the emphasis is on choice. The children have many opportunities to select activities and materials and to share their experiences throughout the day. Children are helped to learn to communicate thoughts and feelings, to listen, and to use words to solve conflicts, thus strengthening both language and social development. During the Kindergarten Adventure Club sessions, activities are planned to reinforce and enrich the Kindergarten class experience.
Children want to make sense and meaning out of their world and to use experiences to construct knowledge. Adventure Club curriculum reflects the philosophy that children learn best when the curriculum is diverse. All areas of a child’s development play a part, including physical, social, emotional and cognitive. Thematic units are often used to unify centers and activities that can be staff-directed and/or child-directed.
