Curriculum Overview
Reading
Classes will be divided into flexible groups. This means the groups will be changed throughout the year. We will be using a variety of sources for reading; children's literature books, basal readers, skill builders, and reference material. We will cover skills necessary for comprehension, word attack, and vocabulary building.
Language Arts
The basics of the writing process will be taught and used. We will work on sentence structure, writing paragraphs, and writing longer pieces including narratives. Students will study and write poetry. Grammar basics will also be taught. A variety to literature genres will be shared to help students see how authors use words, ideas, and techniques. Fables will be taught and written. Spelling will be tested in a variety of ways, both formally and informally.
Math
There is an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. Basic facts will be reviewed. Pretests will be given at the beginning of each unit to individualize instruction as much as possible. We will cover place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. There will also be units covering geometry, time, and measurement. Large and small group instruction will be used.
Science
Our science units will emphasize a "hands-on" approach. We will be conducting many experiments using the scientific method. Science fair projects will be encouraged. Units of study include simple machines, plants, weather, earthquakes and volcanoes, ecosystems, and rocks and minerals.
Social Studies
We will learn about Missouri during the first part of the school year. We will be using textbooks and other sources. At least one special report will be assigned. During the remainder of the year we will learn about the different regions of the United States. Once again textbooks and other sources will be used. Projects and reports will be assigned when appropriate.
