Reading
Classes will be divided into flexible groups. This means the groups will be changed throughout the year. We will be using a variety of sources for reading: basal readers, skill builders, and reference materials. Using a variety of genres, we will cover skills necessary for comprehension, word attack, and vocabulary building.
Language Arts
The basics of the writing process will be taught and used. We will work on sentence structure, writing paragraphs, and writing longer pieces including a four paragraph essay. Grammar basics will also be taught. A variety of literature genres will be shared to help students see how authors use words, ideas, and techniques. Spelling will be tested in a variety of ways, both formally and informally.
Math
There is an emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. Basic facts will be reviewed. Pretests will be given at the beginning of each unit to individualize instruction as much as possible. We will cover place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. There will also be units covering geometry, time, and measurement. Large and small group instruction will be used.
Science
Our science units will emphasize a "hands-on" approach. We will be conducting many experiments using the scientific method. Units of study include simple machines, plants, weather, and the Earth's surface which includes rocks and minerals, earthquakes, and the make-up of earth itself.
Social Studies
We will learn about Missouri throughout the school year. We will be using textbooks and other sources. At least one special report and oral presentation will be assigned. We will visit Babler Park for a look back in Missouri's history to see how the settlers lived. The end of the year will focus on the regions of the United States including geography, economics, and resources.
