Fond Farewell

Hello everyone, I hope all is well.  Enclosed you will find a farewell letter from Ellen Berger, our beloved counselor of 20 years.  Mrs. Berger has touched the lives of so many children in her years of service to this community.  Please add a comment to this blog to help us show her how appreciated she is.  If you know families that no longer have children at Ballwin, spread the word and encourage them to visit the Blog to help send Ellen off Ballwin style!  Thank you, Tim.

Dear Ballwin Parents and Students,

It has been my honor and privilege to be the counselor at Ballwin Elementary for the past 20 years.  Over this time I have made so many wonderful relationships with parents, students, and staff.  I will be retiring at the end of this school year and will always remember the wonderful times I have had working with your children. This has been truly, a wonderful job.

"Stick With It"

Hello Ballwin Families!

I hope all is well.  Last Thursday, 3/29, we had an all school assembly to try and help our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students get excited about taking the MAP test.  The MAP test is a fairly long test and students need stamina and perseverance to be able to "stick with it" and do their best.  We had fun focusing on the theme "Stick With It" and students took turns taping the principal's to the poles in the gym.  We are trying to find a balance of stressing the importance of the test without stressing out your children.  Please encourage them to do their best!  We would love to hear your feedback about what is happening at home.  Are your kids worried about the Map?  Have they mentioned it at all? Thanks for taking the time to give us feedback, Tim.

Science/Safety Night

Hello Ballwin Families, I hope all is well.

Last Thursday night, 2/2/12, Ballwin Elementary and Woerther Elementary combined their efforts and resources to hold a science/safety night for our students. I would like to thank Mrs. Jane Levy, Principal at Woerther Elementary, for inviting our school to be a part of such a great program.  Special thanks to Rebecca Bullington, Woerther’s PTO, and Partner’s in Education for coordinating everything.  I thought the night was fantastic!  We had presenters from Monsanto, Children's Hospital, Ballwin Police, Rockwood Robotics Club, Washington University, County Police, NCADA, and many more.  I have attached a few pictures that Stacy Dugan-Wilcox took that night.  Thank you Stacy for the great photos!  If you went to the Science/Safety Night I hope your children enjoyed it.  I would love to hear your feedback!  Please take the time to add a comment.

Thanks, Tim.

Birthday Celebrations Conversation

Hello everyone, I hope all is well.   I was hoping that I might be able to get some feedback from you on one of our current practices.   When a child at Ballwin Elementary has a birthday many of them come to class ready to share cupcakes, cookies, and all sorts of goodies with their classmates and teachers.  While I agree Birthdays are special and should be celebrated I don’t think our current practice is the best way to do that in a school setting.   First of all, there are new guidelines from The Department of Education on school health and nutrition that don’t support this practice.  Secondly, we have a number of children that have allergies and cannot have the delicious treats that are brought in.  Every time there's a birthday they feel left out.  Last but certainly not least, the loss of instructional time by having mini birthday parties is a concern.

I am interested in two things, your thoughts on the issue and any ideas you have on how we can keep the tradition of having something special for our birthday students but that also address the above concerns.  I think a good alternative would be to recognize students during morning announcements, wish them happy birthday at lunch, and give them some type of special treat for dessert.  I would love to hear your thoughts, Tim.

Ballwin Night At McDonalds

Thank you to all who came and supported our Ballwin McStaff Night.  We raised a little over $400 dollars for our Adopt a Family Project.  I know the lines were incredible and the time you spent waiting probably wasn't worth the Big Mac.  On the other hand, I saw so many of our students having a great time seeing their teachers and playing with friends at Mickey D's.

Honestly at the beginning of the evening I wasn't wild about doing the event. I would have rather opened up my wallet and made a donation.  By the end of the evening I had a change of heart; it was great to see our students having fun outside of school for a good cause.  I saw some parents getting frustrated, and rightfully so, but I hope that your children had a good time and that you didn't regret coming.

We can certainly improve this event if we decide to ever do it again.  We could spread the evening out a little better and maybe take pre-orders.  I’m interested to know if you came to our McStaff night would you come again?  Suggestions? Comments? Thanks Tim.
Veteran's Day

Hello Ballwin Elementary community, I hope all is well.  As a way for you to provide input into the things that are happening at school I am starting a blog.  This is my first attempt and I hope that you find it a productive tool for communication.

The topic of my first blog is Veteran’s Day.    I think it is important for students to learn about our country’s armed forces and where they fit into our government.  We should teach our students about honoring the men and women who choose to serve their country through one of the branches of the military.  On November 9th we did just that.  One of our Ballwin parents, Becky Hoffman, planned, organized, and implemented a celebration that we can all be proud of.

There were guests here from every branch of the military that spoke to classes and answered questions.  Most of the service men and women were relatives of our students.   Our Character Council welcomed our guests and escorted them to their destinations.  We had a nice reception for them and an assembly to honor our guests.  During the assembly Marquette’s Marching Band and Ballwin’s Fifth Grade Chorus performed.  We also heard from the USO who stressed the importance of community service.  There is link on our website if you would like to see pictures and learn more about it.

Have you had a chance to talk to your child/children about the event?  I would love to hear your thoughts.  Maybe you have suggestions for next year.  For example, I would like to look into the possiblity of having video messages from family members that are serving in another part of the country or overseas that we could play during the assembly.  Imagine a child that has a mother, father, brother or sister serving our country and during an assembly they receive a message from that special person.  Your thoughts?  Thank you, Tim.
