1.) Instruct staff that person receiving bomb threat should, as soon as possible, write down the exact time and exactly what the person said. Use Form 5250 - Threatening Phone Call Report Form.
2.) Plan of action: If notified of bomb in the building, the principal should review the information regarding the call and use professional judgement in determining the legitimacy of the threat. If it appears the threat may have substance:
a.) Call the Superintendent's office.*
b.) Notify law enforcement officers. * Police will want someone familiar with building and contents to assist in search.
c.) Evacuate building.*
i.) Use fire drill alarm and procedure.
ii.) Return after building has been searched.
iii.) In bad weather, return to gym or auditorium after search of that area.
d.) Identify priority search areas as a guide to the officers.
i.) Area where caller of threat said bomb might be placed.
ii.) Area of unusual circumstance identified by teacher check.
iii.) Lockers.
iv.) Gymnasium, auditorium, cafeteria, etc.
e.) All media contact should be through the Superintendent's office. The media liaison will be responsible for media contact within the building.
* These activities will be occurring simultaneously. At all times the safety of students and personnel must be primary. Calls may need to be made away from the building.
