PREPARING FOR KINDERGARTEN
Tips for preparing your child for Kindergarten:
  • Please read to your child for at least 15 minutes every night.
  • While reading to your child, point to the words as you are reading them. This will model the correct direction for reading.
  • Encourage your child to keep a journal. At first, the child may be drawing picture to retell an event. Eventually, as children become more familiar with letters and sounds, they will begin exploring the writing process.
  • In Kindergarten, we are responsible for learning the following spelling words: the, and, is, it, in, at, I, we, can, like, see, my, me, you, and a. You may like to begin drawing attention to these words as you are reading.
  • Encourage your child to be aware of their environment. You can accomplish this by pointing out such signs as McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, etc. The children are beginning to develop an awareness for letters and how they go together to make words. They think they are reading, and thinking you can is half the battle!
  • Have your child be an active participant in daily literacy activities. You can do this by involving them in making grocery lists, following recipes, birthday wish lists, and cutting coupons.
  • Make learning fun by practicing numbers and letters with paint, shaving cream, magnets, and sand. The more senses that you appeal to, the more likely your child is to remember it.
  • Learning the letters and the sounds that they make is a huge undertaking for kindergarten students. The children in K-2 learn the vowels with the following picture clues: A: apple, E: elephant, I: igloo, O: octopus, and U: umbrella.
  • The children learn the following word attack strategies:
    1. Use picture clues.
    2. Sound it out.
    3. Look at the word parts.
    4. Read to the end of the sentence.
    5. Make a good guess.
