Not all algorithms outlined in this section will be formally taught in the classroom, but rather they represent the ideas that children often develop in discovery of mathematics. After children have had plenty of opportunities to experiment with their own computational strategies, they are introduced to several algorithms for each operation. The first algorithm introduced in each section is the focus algorithm which will lead instruction of the algorithms in the classroom. These algorithms, while they may seem mundane if one is used to more traditional algorithms, actually lead children to a greater understanding of place value in computation and future mental strategies.
As parents, try to be accepting and encouraging when your children attempt these computational procedures. As they experiment and share their solution strategies, please allow their ideas to flourish.
