Proficiency in communication enables and strengthens skills in all facets of life. Effective communication for the 21st century will require competency in writing/composition, speaking/listening, research, literature/reading, vocabulary and media literacy. Therefore, the Rockwood high school language arts curriculum is organized around these six essential Core Conceptual Objectives.
To empower our students for success in future educational, social, and occupational pursuits, the Rockwood School District language arts teachers are committed to preparing each student to his potential as a communicator. This commitment is manifested through multiple level course offerings at each grade. In addition, within each course, every teacher views each student as an individual learner with unique needs and abilities.
Differentiation and acceleration are accomplished through whole class, small group, and individualized strategies in which all levels of critical thinking are addressed. The communication skills of the language arts curriculum are the components of life-long, self-directed learning.
