There are many exciting events coming up this month in May! Be sure to check the school calendar to find out about field trips, Ellisville Field Day, Track Meet, and so much more!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: USED BOOK EXCHANGE
The used book exchange is a tradition here at Ellisville that gives students an opportunity to trade gently used books for other gently used books they haven’t read. For every TWO books donated the students get to select ONE new book for their library at home. The students LOVE this opportunity each year.
A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Jenifer Fitzgerald and Mrs. Rona Gerber for chairing this committee. Other volunteers to be recognized for working this week-long event are: Susan Baldwin, Charlotte Brown, Julie Lastarria, Rachael Narsh, Christine Murphy, Francesca Pietoso, Debbie Schelp, Terri Shelton, Melissa Urkevich, and Sylvia Warnock.
This year 1,047 books were brought in to be exchanged! J
Have a great day!
Allison Loy, Principal 4/11/2013
As I sit here typing I couldn’t be more proud to be the principal of Ellisville Elementary. On Tuesday of this week we held our first Leadership Day to showcase the Leader in Me Program that we implemented this year! We had 107 RSVPs for the event and 118 people in attendance! We also had several schools come to learn and see what the program looked like including: Parkway, New Haven, Caledonia, Northwest R1, and two other Rockwood Schools. I would like to THANK those of you that could be a part of this event and see our students take the lead and showcase their strengths. The students took their roles very seriously and presented with courage and pride. I would like to share with you just a few of the comments we received on Tuesday.
“AMAZING! Proud to be a part of this. Overheard the Stanton teacher say our school was going to SOAR!”
“You have such a friendly community and your kids were so proud! Love this school!”
“Students articulated beautifully. They were independent and mature in their behavior!”
“What an amazing day! You’re students and staff had such a positive energy and you can tell your hard work is paying off!”
“I’m blown away! The energy between the staff and kids was very inspirational. Thank you for starting this program, your hard work is greatly appreciated!”

Dear Ellisville Parents,
While several months of teaching and learning remain in the school year, it is at this time that we are planning ahead for the 2013-2014 school year. One of our most important tasks is student placement. Student placement is a team effort at Ellisville involving classroom teachers, special education teachers, reading specialists, counselors, administrators, and parents. The process is quite involved as the professional staff considers learning styles, leadership skills, academic abilities, interest, IEP needs, individual personalities, health considerations, district requirements (class sizes, clustering of TAG students, Reading Intervention programming, etc.), and parental input. If you would like to provide specific information, which will impact your child’s achievement in terms of placement, please complete the Student Profile Sheet attached to this Tiger Ticker. SPECIFIC TEACHERS CANNOT BE REQUESTED; rather, share the knowledge you have about your child, and we will do our very best to place each student with a teacher and class that will best meet his/her needs. Student Profile Sheets are due to the office by Friday, April 19th. Tentative class lists are developed this spring with some changes occurring throughout the summer as we enroll and place new students.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHTS:
Prior to going on Spring Break, we celebrated one of my favorite traditions here at Ellisville—DONUTS WITH DADS! I really like this event because the students walk in heads held high with their Dads or another special family member. They have THEIR Dads all to THEMSELVES at THEIR school to show them off. I would like to recognize Rachel Narsh for chairing this committee and making it a reality. Other parent volunteers during this event were Rona Gerber, Amy Buckley, Cathy Volk, Terri Shelton, Melisa Urkevich, Darla Youngquist, and Lainie Sgouros. This year 53 dozen donuts were served on two separate days. Lots of smiles and friendly conversation was observed. Thanks to all of you who participated in this event!
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR—I would also like to recognize and thank Jennifer Fitzgerald for chairing the Book Fair Committee along with all the volunteers that came to help in the library.
Parents and previous students that worked this year’s book fair include: Sandy Buren, Kellee Crowe, Susan Baldwin, Jennifer Bingham, Darla Youngquist, Kim Temperly, Diane Durbin, Michelle Halter, Eilla Guenzler, Dinah Marchand, Kathy DeHart, Cheryl Anderson, Eva Harrell, Christine Murphy, Rashmi Gupta, Kashish Gupta, and Sylvia Warnock. Volunteers help students fill out their Wish List and run the cash registers during shopping times. All proceeds benefit our school library. This year $3431.93 in Scholastic Dollars was earned, which will be used in the Scholastic Resource catalog. Purchasing suggestions come from students and teachers on titles they would like to order.
Make it a great day!

Dear Ellisville Parents,
Here’s to wishing all of you a WONDERFUL SPRING BREAK!! It sounds like the weather is going to cooperate, at least, at the beginning of our break. If you are traveling, travel safely and if not, enjoy the multitude of things that St. Louis has to offer!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHTS:
VARIETY SHOW
WOW! For all of you that attended our 8th Annual VARIETY SHOW, you surely witnessed some talented Ellisville Student Acts! I am always impressed with the vast array of talents our students possess and the courage they demonstrate performing on stage. WAY TO GO STUDENTS! Also, a “Big Shout Out” to our 5th Grade Emcees who did a fabulous job hosting the evening!
A BIG THANK YOU to Chris Sigman who chaired the Variety Show this year! The Variety Show is a huge undertaking which includes securing a venue, scheduling tryouts and rehearsals, and ensuring that each act is ready and in place backstage. The show was seamless this year even after a reschedule due to a snow day.
THANK YOU also to the entire Variety Show Committee – Sarina Handa, Julie Paul, Rona Gerber, Anneleise Cox, Susan Baldwin, Lisa Tang and Toni Alvarez. The time you donated to this event made many special memories for Ellisville families. THANK YOU!
BOX TOPS
Thanks so much to Laurie Luther for chairing a successful Box Tops year. Thanks also to all the volunteers who helped with this most recent Box Tops collection counting - Amy Buckley, Chris Sigman, Diane Durbin, Janine Muntean, Julie Lastarria, Laura Ramsey, Lauren Rayfield, Luci Vache, Mandi Howard and Terri Shelton. Box Tops collected an additional $620.90 this semester. Combine this total with the fall collection and it brings this school year's collection to $2284!
Box Tops, along with Ready, Set, GIVE! Donations, benefit our children in many school activities and programs such as additional technology, The Leader in Me, Field Day, school parties, etc. Thanks so much to everyone who sent in Box Tops. Since 2004 Ellisville Elementary has earned over $24,867 by collecting Box Tops!!!
TECHNOLOGY SPOTLIGHT:
Fifth grade teacher Beth Collom writes: “I am so thankful for my student laptops. I have a very active classroom, so technology that moves with us is key. Smartboards enable me to teach interactively. Students are more engaged, and you should see how many hands go up when I ask for a volunteer at the Smartboard.”
Fifth grader Katie Kenney writes: “What I like about the technology in the classroom is that it helps us learn in a fun way. The computers give us a fun way of learning by us being able to play games like Brainpop or Fastmath. The Smartboard can give our teachers a chance to show us videos or PowerPoint to help us learn.”
On April 2, Rockwood voters will consider Proposition S, a $38.4 million no-tax rate increase bond issue on the ballot. Through Picture Rockwood, a citizen-led community engagement process, priorities for our students were identified. Please mark your calendars to vote!
Please visit http://www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/props/Pages/Projects.aspx for specific project lists.
ENJOY SPRING BREAK!! Allison Loy, Principal 3/12/2013
Dear Ellisville Families,
BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Ms. Hager, our Assistant Principal, has announced that she will be retiring at the conclusion of this school year and embarking on a new life journey. We are all very happy for her but very sad for us. Ms. Hager has been a part of the Ellisville team for the past nine years and was an integral part in helping mold our school into what it has become: A NATIONAL SCHOOL OF CHARACTER! Thank You Ms. Hager for your dedication to Ellisville Elementary!!
At this time, I am also pleased to announce that the Interview Committee, consisting of staff, parents, and Central Office personnel, overwhelmingly chose Ms. Emily Dittmer as the next Assistant Principal of Ellisville. Ms. Dittmer currently serves as our Music Teacher. With her new position, we are now facing the difficult task of seeking someone to fill Ms. Dittmer’s music shoes! Ms. Dittmer has been involved in numerous leadership opportunities over the past two years. She also serves on several district committees including PLC Coaching Academy and Standards Based Grading and Reporting. I look forward to working with Ms. Dittmer in her new role next year.
Ellisville Teacher of the Year:
Ellisville’s 2013 Teacher of the Year is Mrs. Adie Smith, current Full-Day Kindergarten Teacher! The Teacher of the Year is voted on by the Ellisville staff. Mrs. Smith is an extraordinary teacher who spends extra time making lessons meaningful and engaging for her students. She is completely student-focused and always strives to find new ways to meet each child’s needs. Mrs. Smith is a true collaborator on our staff and serves on the District PDC Committee and District Math Committee. Mrs. Smith will represent Ellisville Elementary in the Rockwood Teacher of the Year Vote. The Rockwood Teacher of the Year will be announced at the ROSE Award Ceremony on May 5th. Good Luck, Adie!!!
Please remember to Vote on April 2nd. Visit this link http://www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/PROPS/Pages/Projects.aspx to see how PropS will support Ellisville and our feeder schools!
Have a great day!

Dear Ellisville Parents,
Please mark your calendar for Tuesday, April 2. It’s Election Day and voters will be considering Prop S, a no-tax rate increase bond issue on the ballot. Below are some answers to voting information.
When are polls open on April 2?
Polls will be open at 6 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m.
Who may vote?
Any Rockwood resident who is a registered voter may vote in this election. Anyone needing to register to vote or needed to update his or her voter registration information may do so at any Rockwood school, or any St. Louis County library or City Hall. The deadline for processing registrations, reinstatements and transfers is March 6 to be eligible to vote in the April 2 election.
Where may I vote?
Just prior to the election date, each registered voter will receive a postcard from the election office designated the polling place for the election.
I’m out of town on April 2. May I vote by absentee ballot?
Yes. St. Louis County registered voters wishing to cast an absentee ballot should call 314.615.1800. In Jefferson County, call 636.797.5486. St. Louis County residents may download the absentee ballot application online.
March 27 is the last day absentee ballot requests are accepted by mail at the election office. Absentee ballots must be returned to the Election Office by April 1.
April 1 is the last day to cast an absentee ballot in person at the Election Office. The office is located at 12 Sunnen Drive in Maplewood for St. Louis County residents and 729 Maple Street in Hillsboro for Jefferson County residents.
How many “Yes” votes are required for the bond issue to pass?
The Constitution of the State of Missouri requires a four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority for passage of the bond issue.
How will Proposition S appear on the ballot?
The ballot language for Proposition S is as follows:
Shall the Rockwood R-6 School District, St. Louis County, Missouri, issue its general obligation bonds in the amount of $38.4 Million Dollars ($38,400,000) for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, renovating, repairing, improving, furnishing and equipping school sites, buildings and related facilities in the District, including but not limited to (1) safety and health measures, (2) technology infrastructure and classroom technology and (3) maintenance of current facilities by continuing to fund major capital repairs and improvements, resulting in no estimated increase in the debt service property tax levy? If this proposition is approved, the adjusted debt service levy of the District is estimated to remain unchanged at sixty-eight cents ($0.68) per one hundred dollars assessed valuation of real and personal property.

Dear Ellisville Parents,
I want to make sure you are aware that on April 2, Rockwood voters will consider PROP S, a $38.4 million no-tax rate increase bond issue on the ballot.
This proposed bond issue was recommended by our Picture Rockwood Facilitating Team. I know many of you attended these workshops last semester. What’s important to remember is that many priorities for our students were identified during this community engagement process. PROP S provides funding for some of them, including:
Safety: Provide for safety modifications, such as security cameras, door-locking systems and check-in centers at school entrances.
Technology: Update computers and networks so students are prepared for 21st century learning required by today’s and tomorrow’s workforce.
School Improvements: Repair and renovate existing schools to maintain the district’s investment in facilities and buildings. Ellisville Elementary is on this list of improvements.
Please note that PROP S is a no-tax rate increase bond issue, which means that passage would not require an increase to the district’s current debt service tax rate. A four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority is necessary for passage on April 2.
I encourage you to become informed about all the projects provided by this proposed bond issue. Many of the projects are district-wide in focus, such as technology network upgrades that will help us prepare for upcoming state testing mandates, interior door locks for our classrooms, and visitor check-in centers to provide line-of-sight access to anyone approaching our school.
Remember: You can find more information about PROP S online at www.rockwood.k12.mo.us/propS
We invite our families to join us on Facebook. Take the time to Like · Comment · Share the information about our students and schools.
Thank you,
Allison Loy, Principal 2/14/2013
Dear Ellisville Families,
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life. Habit 7 reminds us that we are more productive when we are in balance—body, brain, heart and soul. Many people look at Habit 7 and think of exercise because sometimes this is the one area that gets overlooked because of busy schedules. Habit 7 can include a variety of things for our students. Ideas may include: body (playing outside, riding your bike), brain (balancing reading with watching TV or making smart choices on what you watch), heart (making a list of what makes you happy and doing something on the list every day, spending time with special friends and family), and soul (starting a journal).
Volunteer Spotlight:
Girls on the Run: The GOTR mission is to inspire girls to be Joyful, Healthy and Confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates Running. Both staff and parents are involved in leading this program. GOTR will meet every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 4:15-5:30 p.m. beginning February 19th. The culminating activity is a 5K in downtown St. Louis on May 11th. We have 14 girls signed up and ready to participate! Below are the volunteers and their positions. Thanks ladies for giving your time to make a difference in these girls’ lives and practicing Habit 7 with our students!!
Assistant Coaches: Kellee Crowe, Christine Schultheiss, Anita Shawke, & Toni Smith
Site Liaison & Head Coach: Eilla Guenzler
Head Coach: Sarah Tschoepe
Practice Partners: Daedra Lohr & Allison Loy
Service Spotlight:
Collect Spare Change and Change Lives
First and second grade students are sponsoring a school-wide Pasta for Pennies service project that benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Olive Garden will provide a luncheon for the class that collects the most change.
To boost each class’s total, Ellisville will have a Spirit Day, "Change Your Clothes Backwards", on Friday, February 15th. Students can wear their clothes backwards for .25 cents. Coins in six classrooms have been counted so far, and the total is: $445.19! The collection will continue until February 28th. Kids Can Make a Difference!
Make it a Great Day!!

Dear Ellisville Families,
The word “synergy” seems like it may be a hard word for 5 year old students to grasp. Not at Ellisville Elementary! When visiting our Kindergarten Friends they can easily tell you the definition of synergy! “Working together…Together is better!”
Habit 6: Synergize. Synergize is when two or more people work together to create a better solution than either would have thought of alone. It’s not your way or my way, but a better way. Talk about the equation: 1+1=3 (or more). How is that possible? 1 person + another person = 2 ideas + many more than either of them would have thought of alone. Synergy is taking good ideas and making them better by working together.
With your children, choose a problem you may have (like setting a curfew or completing a task). Use the Synergy Action Plan to summarize your child’s solution and your solution: 1) Define the Problem. 2) Share your views. 3) Think of solutions. 4) Choose the best solution together. See if you can reach a better solution (the High Way) than either of you would have come up with alone. (Taken from The Leader in Me Parents Guide)
Volunteer Spotlight:
Once a month two dedicated Moms of Ellisville, Elizabeth Ulrich and Amy Buckley, sponsor Book and Breakfast for interested students in Grades 1-3. This club advocates reading and fun which supports our Rockwood Curriculum! THANK YOU Ladies for sharing your time, talents and love of reading with our students.
Service Spotlight:
The fifth graders at Ellisville Elementary want to make a difference in our community by volunteering at the St. Louis Food Bank. They demonstrated Habit 3, Begin With the End in Mind, and came up with a plan. In order to raise money for their field trip buses, they held a Read-A-Thon. Students had friends and family sponsor them by pledging money based on how many minutes they read. On Monday, January 28th, the students read for almost three hours! After the money was collected and counted, the students made over $1000!! The fifth grade class will be holding a school-wide canned food drive at the end of the month. During the first week of March, they will deliver the food and volunteer at the Food Bank warehouse. Way to go 5th Grade!!!
Make it a great day!
Allison Loy, Principal 1/31/2013
Dear Ellisville Families,
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood means that it is better to listen first and talk second. By taking the time to listen to another person, you reach a higher level of communication. Teaching Habit 5 to young children is done by first considering their age and development. Young children find it difficult to understand another’s paradigm (point of view). This habit is best approached by introducing listening as a skill that should be practiced. Learning to listen without interrupting and learning to listen with your ears, your eyes, and your heart will help children build a foundation for Habit 5. Simply put, we have two ears and one mouth so that we can spend more time listening with the intent to understand.
Something to try: Ask yourself what your biggest listening problem is. Do you “pretend listen”? Do you only listen to give advice or judge? Do you plan what you are going to say instead of really listening? Work to improve your listening skills and model good listening behavior. (Taken from The Leader in Me Parents Guide)
To learn more about Habits 4-7 please plan on attending our Parent Seminar next Tuesday, February 5th, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Please RSVP to Charlotte Brown. A Honeybaked Ham Dinner will be provided by our PTO. J
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: This week I would like to highlight two committees that are devoted to making the lives of our teachers easier. The first one is Copy Helpers, chaired by Jen Brotherton. The parents on this committee give their time to solely make copies for our staff members. They come in three times a week for an hour to an hour and a half each time. The next committee is Helping Hands, chaired by Kathy Johnson. Typical jobs for these parents include laminating, assembling projects, cutting, binding books, etc. These two committee make a lot of really creative ideas come to life for our students. A BIG THANKS to all of you that serve on Copy Helpers and Helping Hands!
SERVICE SPOTLIGHT:
Fourth grade had a school wide pajama day to "Snuggle up with a good book to help our furry friends." Students could donate 25 cents or more to wear pajamas. Mrs. Rauckman's students visited other classes in the school to read stories about animals with special needs and special circumstances. All 4th grade students wrote persuasive letters to friends and family telling them about SNUGGLE and asking them to sponsor them to raise a penny a page for two weeks. SNUGGLE visited with several kittens and puppies, and they even brought a blind cat. They taught our students about being a voice for those that don't have one. We are proud to announce that our students raised $847.00 for the cause. For more information about SNUGGLE visit their website at http://www.snuggle-petrescue.com/.
Have a great week! Enjoy the unpredictable weather as much as possible!!
