The ESOL program focuses on understanding of social and academic language to promote competency in school and community settings through individualized instruction and support.
Program Description:
- Instruction provided in students' home schools
- Individualized instruction
- Instructional models: one-on-one, small group, or assistance within the regular classroom
- Social language instruction - emphasis on the concurrent development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through authentic student-centered materials
- Academic language instruction - emphasis on student accomplishment of District CCOs (Core Curriculum Objectives)
- Instruction in basic usage of District computer technology
- Instruction in U.S. cultural literacy
- Support of students' home cultures through comparison of cultures within the instructional framework, District-wide celebrations, school-based multicultural festivals, and educational outreach to individual classrooms
- Liaison between school and families
- Monitoring of LM (Language Minority) students' progress at regular intervals
Program Objectives:
- Student Acquisition of social language to promote competency in school and community settings
- Student acquisition of academic language to promote competency in the District CCOs (Core Curriculum Objectives)
- Student acquisition of English as a tool for imagination, critical thinking, and reflection
- Student use of District technology
- Student understanding of American culture
Identification of Students:
- Home Language Survey
- Referral by regular classroom teacher, parent, counselor, staff or administrator
- Student performance on standardized tests and/or academic performance
