In order to graduate from the Rockwood School District each student is required to have 2 1/2 credits of Social Studies. Every student must take one year of American History, one year of World History, and one semester of American Government. Also the state requires that each student take and pass the United States Constitution and Missouri Constitution tests. However, many colleges require three credits or more of social studies, so we encourage students to take more than are required. In addition, the Social Studies Department offers a wide-ranging array of electives, i.e. Psychology, Sociology, American West, Civil War, Contemporary Issues, Law, World War II and Beyond, and Economics. We also offer a number of Advanced Placement classes, where students can take a national exam. If the student scores high enough they can then obtain college credit. These classes include European History, Government, Psychology, and American History. We encourage students to take these higher-level classes because not only will they challenge a person, but studies have shown that students who take these types of rigorous studies do better in college and score higher on college entrance exams.
