Fall Identification Procedure

Phase I:  Nomination Process

  1. All kindergarten students will participate in Classroom Screening Lessons taught by the Gifted Program’s Kindergarten Resource Teachers.  These enrichment lessons will take place in the regular classroom during students’ regular kindergarten program.  The lessons are 30 minutes in length and focus on students’ creative and critical thinking abilities.  A total of three lessons and related activities will be offered during the months of September and October.
  2. Two 30 minute ability tests will be given to all kindergarten students as part of their regular kindergarten program.  These assessments will be group administered in kindergarten classrooms by the Gifted Program’s Kindergarten Resource Teachers.

Students who score at the upper levels on the nomination assessments will be recommended to participate in Phase II of the Fall Identification Procedure.

Phase I
I:  Intelligence Test and Rating Scale

  1. Parents of nominated students will receive a letter from the gifted program indicating that the next phase of identification is administration of an intelligence test.
  2. Parents interested in continuing with the identification process will be asked to make a testing appointment at the Center. Appointments are available both in the morning and afternoon.  Students should be tested at a time when they are not scheduled to attend their kindergarten program, if possible.
  3. Intelligence testing for Fall Identification will be administered by Rockwood School District personnel in November and December of each school year.
  4. The Renzulli Rating Scale is completed for each student by the parent and/or classroom teacher.

Students who score 132 or above on the intelligence test will be recommended to participate in Phase III of the Fall Identification Procedure.

Phase I
II:  Academic Achievement Assessment and Other Criteria

  1. In December, the Kindergarten Resource Teachers will administer an individual achievement test to all students recommended for Phase III of the identification process.  Testing takes place at the elementary schools during the regular school day.

  2. There will be one make-up session scheduled for students who were absent during classroom instruction by the Gifted Resource Teacher.  Sessions will also be scheduled for private and parochial school students.
  3. Students who have a total matrix score of 26 or above are eligible to enroll in the Rockwood Gifted Program.
