Rockwood students nominated for the gifted program must be administered an intelligence test by district personnel in order to qualify for the program. Students with a score of 132 or higher will be considered for the program through the basic identification process.
Retesting by the Program. Students who do not meet entrance criteria after administration of an intelligence test by the gifted program are eligible for retesting by program personnel. Retesting can be requested by a parent or staff member by using a standard gifted program nomination form. Students may be renominated only one time and that renomination needs to be at least two years after the initial nomination was submitted.
Private Testing. Families may seek outside testing at their own expense if their child receives a Full Scale IQ score of 125 or higher on the intelligence test administered by the program. Only testers on Rockwood Gifted Program’s approved tester list may submit intelligence test scores (see attachment). These scores will be considered in conjunction with other information collected during the identification process. Outside testers must adhere to the program’s “Guidelines for the Private Administration of Standardized Tests”. To ensure that generated scores are acceptable, these guidelines should be shared with the examiner prior to the testing experience. If families decide to move ahead with private testing, the examiner should send a letter to the program’s identification office providing a brief summary of the student’s test results. Attached to this letter should be a copy of the completed test protocol. A diagnostic interpretation of scores need not be included.
Private testing results will not be accepted for students receiving a Full Scale IQ score of less than 125 on the test administered by the Rockwood Gifted Program. Exceptions to this guideline are only made after a written request for review is submitted to the program director and the review determines that specific circumstances could have impacted testing results. In those unusual cases, follow-up testing to determine student eligibility for private testing will be scheduled by the gifted program. All students scoring below 125 have the option of being retested by the gifted program after two years have elapsed since the initial intelligence testing took place (see “Retesting by the Program” above).
Transfer Students. Students transferring into Rockwood may submit results from intelligence tests that were administered by their former district. The tests need to be the same as those used by Rockwood’s program. Students with a score of 132 or higher will be considered for the program. Students who have results that are lower than 132 will need to be retested by Rockwood Gifted Program personnel in order to qualify for the program.
Please note that test results must be received by our office at least one week prior to the start of a new quarter at the Center. Information that is received after this point will be considered during the following quarter’s admission process.
The Rockwood Gifted Program’s testing guidelines are designed to maintain fair and equitable procedures for identifying students for the program. There will be no deviation from these guidelines without the written permission of the Director of the Rockwood Gifted Program.
