Change in Practical Arts Credit for Graduation Requirement
Beginning with the class of 2010, one-half unit of the Practical Arts credit no longer needs to be an approved computer-related course. Students may still take a computer course to meet the Practical Arts credit; however, it is no longer a requirement to take a computer course in order to receive a high school diploma. These requirements for graduation are in accordance with the State Board of Education.

The Computer Proficiency Requirement has been in existence for eight years. At this inception, Rockwood wanted to be sure students were graduating with basic technology skills.
Education has changed in recent years, and technology continues to be a vital component in the district’s curriculum. Currently, more than 28 courses meet the previous Computer Proficiency Requirement for Practical Arts credit. In addition, the 8th-grade Technology Literacy Requirement was created to ensure our students entering high school meet this National Education Technology Standard.
It is important that students and parents understand the value of technology courses offered by Rockwood high schools. These are rigorous courses that provide necessary skills needed to compete in our ever-changing, global society. Students should note the merits of computer classes as they plan their high school academic careers and prepare for the future.
The Rockwood Board of Education approved this change to graduation requirements effective with the class of 2010. At this time, students have completed course selections for spring 2010, and high schools already have developed schedules according to these choices. Students who may be considering changing second semester courses will need to discuss with their guidance counselors the limited course availability at this time.
