5/13/2012Happy Mother's Day
A Mother…
When you’re
a child she walks before you, To set an example. When you’re a teenager she walks behind you To be there should you need her. When you’re an adult she walks beside you So that as two friends you can enjoy life together..

Dear Parents,
It is a busy time here at Kellison. As the school year comes to a close it seems everything speeds up. I know everyone is working hard to make sure we get everything finished and completed for the student, staff, and community. One example is the 5th Grade Dinner. The event was a great experience. The children and families had fun celebrating all their hard work to reach this point in their lives. The food, video, and planning was just excellent. I want to thank all who were involved to make this event so fantastic.
On Sunday several of us were able to attend the Rockwood School District ROSE award ceremony. We celebrated all the outstanding people in our district who were recognized for making a difference. The event also was a showcase for each school to recognize their teacher of the year. Mrs. Wiedemann was just awesome as she walked across the stage to represent our great school. Kim Davis and Kim Schlueter were acknowledged for their years of service to RSD. Linda Ray was acknowledged for her retirement and we all know how much she will be missed at our school by the students, staff, and community.
Don’t forget to check our PSO website as it has information on our school picnic. I am really excited as this should be really fun.
Also, thanks in advance for all you do for our teachers. Staff Appreciation week is always fun and exciting as the teachers are celebrated.
Thanks,
Brian 4/27/2012

Parents,
I wanted to thank everyone for all the great things you do for our students. We celebrated our parents with a lunch last week. We had a great turnout and it was so much fun. We want to thank you for great support because this is what makes our school successful.

Tiger Information:
We are happy to announce that Shannon Stanze will be a new addition to our 4th grade team. She has been at Kellison for the past 2 years with our 5th grade team. She is very excited and will do a great job with her new team. She is excited to jump into the curriculum and start to teach to the kids more about reading and writing.
In support of the Rockwood School District’s annual Relay For Life event, the Board of Education has designated Friday, May 11 as “Power of Purple Day.” All students, staff and teachers are encouraged to wear purple or Relay gear to increase support and awareness of Rockwood’s amazing event. Purple is the signature color for Relay For Life and represents all cancers.
This year marks the 12th annual Rockwood Relay For Life event which will be held June 1-2 at Rockwood Summit High School, 1780 Hawkins Road in Fenton.
Because cancer never sleeps, more than 1,000 Relay For Life supporters will spend 12 hours camping out and enjoying music and activities as team members walk the track to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
“Rockwood’s Relay For Life is truly a community event that celebrates survivors and remembers those who have lost their battles with cancer,” said co-chair Jenise Soyster. Co-chair Eren Taylor-Scaggs added, "This event is much more than a fundraiser; it’s about Rockwood students, staff, parents and the community coming together to join the movement to fight cancer.”
Opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. on Friday and closing ceremonies take place at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday. The event is from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
For more information about signing up a team for Rockwood’s Relay For Life event, visit www.relayforlife.org/rockwoodmo. |

School bus safety is a priority in the Rockwood School District. The focus is on providing safe, efficient transportation services to Rockwood students. Rockwood contracts its residential school bus transportation services with First Student, Inc.
First Student conducts daily inspections. All First Student buses are inspected each day both before they leave our location and upon return. First Student would never put a bus on the road unless they were fully confident in its ability to safely transport passengers.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol conducts annual inspections. The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) inspects every school bus during its annual inspection. The MSHP inspectors are the experts, and we respect their results.
Rockwood sets high expectations for safety. Rockwood expects First Student to maintain a passing percentage and to strive for continuous improvement, as we do in all Rockwood programs. Rockwood expects First Student to take immediate and corrective action to ensure the safety of our students.
What were the inspection results from the MSHP for First Student school buses?
· 2010 Results – The inspection noted defects cited for binding doors (door alignment issues), various light bulbs, warning buzzers, lettering, signage, and loose mirrors. These defects were corrected on the same day of the inspection. Twenty buses were removed from service because parts were not readily available, and it took a couple of additional days to correct certain defects. Bus service was not impacted as spare buses are available on an ongoing basis.
· 2011 Results - The inspection noted four of First Students’ buses were pulled from service. Again, bus service was not impacted as spare buses are always available on an ongoing basis to cycle through the fleet of 170 buses, if any school bus needs repair.
It is important to note that each bus pulled from service was immediately repaired by our safety and maintenance team and successfully re-inspected.
Rockwood is confident in our contracted bus service with First Student, Inc. In our district, school buses travel more than 2 million miles and transport more than 12,000 students each year. Our first priority remains the safety of our students.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I know our school had a great time at the ballgame yesterday as we watched the Cards romp the Cubs. The kids were really excited as they performed during the game. Big thanks to Mrs. Kellerman as she had them ready to go and for picking such a great game to attend.
On Friday I was fortunate to attend our rescheduled movie night. The turnout was great and the movie was fun once we were able to get the lights outJ I think you had to be there to understand how comical it was for two people trying to flip one switch. So if anyone asks you how many people does it take to turn off the lights in the gym the answer is two plus a paper clip.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Volunteer Breakfast on Wednesday. We are lucky to have parents who can give part of their free time to help out at school. I just wanted to thank you for all you do for the students at Kellison.
Rockwood School District will have its annual Art Show this weekend. You can look on the District website for more detailed information.
Also, I have attached a Plant Sale form with information of the process. This form can also be found on our website.
Thanks,

Kellison Connection,
I hope everyone had a great spring break. I am in awe of how fast time is flying by this school year. It is time to start thinking about next year already. I want to let everyone know that there will be some changes to our staff for the 2012-13 school year. Hiring is one of the most difficult and enriching part of an administrator’s job. Our goal is always to have the best people in place in every position to help reach the school’s goal and vision. This does not mean the people not hired are not good or qualified. This concept is what makes it such a difficult process.
Please note that I have attached a PDF form that you can fill out to help with teacher’s request for the next school year. It is very important to read the directions on the form as we wish to hear about learning and teaching styles that may benefit your student. We do not wish to have teachers name listed on the paper.
You may notice there has been some change. This was due to numbers and the fact that our 1st grade went from 4 sections to 3 sections. Here is our list of teachers and grade levels for next year :
KDG: Mrs. Brady and Mrs. Cozzolino
1st Grade: Mrs. Rhodes, Mrs. Wiedmann, and Mrs. Fowler
2nd Grade: Mrs. White, Mrs. Blome, Mrs. Jonn, and Mrs. Davis
3rd Grade: Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Feilner, Mrs. Jackman, and Mrs. Stroot
4th Grade: Mr. Baer, Mrs. Kulifay, Miss Otto, and TBD
5th Grade: Mrs. Blinkinsop, Mrs. Stein, Mrs. Boyle, and Mrs. Tilley
The highlighted teachers are new to Kellison. Here is a little more information about our new additions.
Amanda Boyle, 5th Grade:
This will be Amanda’s 3rd year of teaching 5th grade in Rockwood. She student taught at Bowles, taught for a year at Fairway, and is currently teaching at Wild Horse. Amanda has been involved with several successful Response to Intervention models in the district. She will bring this experience to Kellison and will be helpful as we focus on targeted interventions for our struggling and accelerated students. She attended Truman State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. In addition to teaching, she worked at a Kirkwood summer camp for numerous years. Amanda also has been involved in several different types of PLC’s during her time in RSD.
Mellissa Stein, 5th Grade
This is Melissa’s 6th year teaching in Rockwood. She taught 1 year in 1st grade and 5 years in 4th grade at Eureka Elementary. She is also a RSD graduate. She attended Indiana State University and received a degree in Elementary Education. She was on the track team as a triple jumper during her time in college. She attended Southwest Baptist University and received a Masters in Education. Mellissa has a great understanding reading conferences, writing conferences, small group instruction and the impact on student achievement. She also has a background of working with SSD students with severe needs. Melissa also has a vast experience of working on Response to Intervention PLC’s (Professional Learning Communities). She will be helpful as we move forward and focus on targeted interventions and accelerating all students.
Laura Stroot, 3rdGrade
This is Laura’s Sixth year of teaching in Rockwood. She taught 6 years at 2nd grade and this is her 1st year of teaching 1st grade. Also, she is a Rockwood graduate. After high school she attended the University of Texas in Austin. While attending Texas, she played soccer for the Longhorns. She has attended several RTI workshops and uses reading conferences, writing conferences, goal setting, and small group instruction in her classroom. She also has a background of working with SSD students with severe needs. She also has experience with the Response to Intervention PLC model. She is very focused on teaching each individual student to make sure they do the best they can in school. 3/27/2012

Dear Parent/Guardian:
The Missouri Assessment Program Grade Level Assessments (MAP GLA) will be administered in all
Rockwood Elementary and Middle Schools in grades 3-8 during the test window from April 2 - 27, 2012. The
Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) is one of several educational reforms mandated by the Outstanding
Schools Act of 1993. As a result of this Act, the State Board of Education directed the Missouri Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to identify the knowledge, skills, and competencies that Missouri
students should acquire by the time they complete high school and to assess student progress toward those
academic standards, the Show-Me Standards, on a yearly basis in grades 3-8. To achieve proficiency in the
Show-Me Standards, students must have a strong foundation of knowledge and skills in basic subject areas and
be able to apply what they know to real-world problems and new situations.
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires all states to annually assess student learning in
reading/language arts and mathematics at grades 3 through 8 and also at the completion of specific course level
work in high school. A science assessment will also be required for grades 5 and 8.
For spring 2012, depending on Grade Level and Subject being assessed, each assessment includes two types of
test items: multiple-choice and constructed-response.
The multiple-choice component presents students with a question followed by three, four or five response
options, one of which is correct.
The constructed-response items require students to supply (rather than select) an appropriate response.
Students will be asked to show their work in solving a problem.
DESE will use the information obtained through the Missouri Assessment Program to monitor the progress of
Missouri’s students in meeting the Show-Me Standards, to inform the public and the state legislature about
students’ performance, and to help make informed decisions about educational issues. Taken together, the
information obtained through MAP and district assessment programs will provide a comprehensive picture of
educational progress that will improve the services to each student in the state. Performance on the MAP also
figures prominently in the Missouri School Improvement Program, the basis for school accreditation, and
compliance with meeting the NCLB proficiency standards as reported in the Adequate Yearly Progress report.
It is important that students get sufficient rest and nourishment prior to taking the test. It is also important that if
absent, the student attempt to return to complete the test during the testing window listed above. Please keep in
mind that it is a State mandate that all public education students participate in the MAP.
Thank you in advance for your support of your child’s efforts during this assessment window. 3/9/2012
I wanted to announce that Amy Wiedemann is our teacher of the year. Amy has done a wonderful job and deserves this great honor. She does a great job with all the kids and they love coming to her room to learn. I also wanted to thank all the teachers at Kellison for doing a great job. I know we have one of the best staff’s around.
The MAP testing window for Rockwood elementary and middle schools is April 2 - April 27. Students in grades 3-8 participate in MAP testing. These state assessments help Rockwood monitor how our students are achieving.
In 2011, the Rockwood School District scored above the state in the percentage of students “proficient” or “advanced” in both communication arts and mathematics on the MAP tests. Learn more about student achievement in Rockwood.
View the 2011-2012 testing calendar.
For more information about testing dates, contact the principal or test coordinator at your child's school.

|
Prop R
On April 3, 2012, Rockwood voters will be asked to vote on Proposition R, a $43.2 million no-tax increase bond issue to support three priority areas:
• Technology • Safety measures • Infrastructure and maintenance of current facilities
General Information
How many “Yes” votes are required for the bond issue to pass? The Constitution of the State of Missouri requires a four-sevenths (57.14%) majority for passage of the bond issue.
How will the proposition appear on the ballot? According to state law, the actual wording of the bond issue proposal will appear as:
Proposition R Shall the Rockwood R-6 School District, St. Louis County, Missouri, issue its general obligation bonds in the amount of Forty-Three Million Two Hundred Thousand Dollars ($43,200,000) for the purpose of acquiring, constructing, renovating, repairing, improving, furnishing and equipping school sites, buildings and related facilities in the District, including (1) technology infrastructure and classroom technology, (2) safety and health measures, and (3) maintenance of current facilities by continuing to fund major capital repairs and improvements, resulting in no estimated increase in the debt service property tax levy? If this proposition is approved, the adjusted debt service levy of the school district is estimated to remain unchanged at sixty-eight cents ($0.68) per one hundred dollars assessed valuation of real and personal property. |
