When's the last time you've cleaned out your medicine cabinets?

The Rockwood Drug-Free Coalition will hold a medication take-back event on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Unwanted or expired medicines can be dropped off locally at the following locations:

Spring Break Opportunity for MHS Juniors and Seniors

I know it can be hard to look forward to spring break in December, but I want to get the information out about a unique opportunity for MHS Juniors and Seniors. As some of you know, for the last five years Marquette has joined with the other Rockwood high schools for a spring break trip to the Louisiana Gulf Coast region. The trip started after Hurricane Katrina hit the region and we have made lots of progress in the area since the first trip. Although the area is still working on rebuilding, Marquette has decided to break away from the trip and hold our own trip to Joplin from Sunday, March 18 through Thursday, March 22, 2012. There is so much need right here in our home state.

One of the luxuries of this trip compared to previous years is that students will still be able to enjoy part of their spring break. In the past, the trip covered seven of the nine days we were off, but this year we will only be gone four days. The place we are staying is very nice and most importantly we are helping people in our "backyard." Our next meeting will be Wednesday, January 11 at 6:00 in the theater at MHS. Dr. Ramsey is volunteering to chaperone with Mr. Nelle and other Marquette staff. I hope we will have an overwhelming response for this trip, as I think it will be a memorable event for everyone involved in it.

Senior Panoramic and Graduation Announcements

On Monday, October 31^st seniors will take the panoramic picture and receive information from Jostens about graduation announcements and graduation orders. We will start at 9:00a.m. in the large gym. All students will be released from class to attend, but if your student has late arrival they will need to plan to arrive a 10 minutes earlier than normal. Pictures can be ordered at www.WagnerPortraitGroup.com by using the password MUSTANGS, or by using the form to be sent home on Thursday. The order forms for Jostens will be due on November 4^th and will be handed out on Monday the 31^st. Please remind your senior that no costumes will be allowed in the picture.

We will also ask students to fill out a card for graduation that shows how to pronounce their name. Please discuss the name you want read at graduation with your student and contact Janet Jacob to confirm the spelling. Our phone number is (636) 891-6019.

Important Senior Information

This letter contains important information regarding graduation, diplomas, tickets, and other senior activities. Please carefully review this information.

Marquette and Jostens take great care to create the list used to generate the diplomas, prepare the graduation program, and finalize the list of names read at the ceremony. Mrs. Jacob will be in our office, room 301, during Parent Teacher Conferences to verify names for these lists. Please check the first, middle, and last name of your child for spelling, proper capitalization, etc. If you are unable to stop by the office, please be aware that a letter will be mailed home soon that will include your child’s name as it will appear on their diploma. Please contact Mrs. Jacob in the senior office to confirm that this is the correct spelling and capitalization. All names should be verified no later than December 5, 2011 at 636-891-6019 or jacobjanet@rockwood.K12.mo.us.

The Class of 2012 graduation will be Monday, May 21, 2012 at the St. Louis University Chaifetz Arena. The ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m. Each graduate will receive ten (10) tickets for the graduation ceremony. These ten tickets will be distributed at the mandatory graduation rehearsal on Friday, May 18, 2012 which begins promptly at 10:05 a.m. in the large gym and will end at approximately 1:30 p.m. Limited additional tickets may be requested from Ms. Mayer at 636-891-6024 the week prior to graduation. Seniors participating in the graduation ceremony must attend the entire practice on May 18^th. Please note the seniors last day is on Friday, May 18^th.

Seniors, consider buying a ticket to Senior Farewell 2012. It is a great time and your parents put in countless hours making it a memorable evening for all of you. Ticket prices go up the longer you wait. Tickets are available in the school store. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Smith at (636)579-0625 or karenandchris90@charter.net.

The Senior Panoramic Picture is scheduled for Monday, October 31^st at 9:00 a.m. Any students who have Sr. Incentive Late Arrival need to arrive early to be included. Students will also receive information regarding their cap/gown/graduation announcements during this time. In the future, please direct all questions regarding cap/gown/graduation announcements to Larry Glennon at Jostens, 636-230-7350.

The Senior Advisory selected the class motto that will be listed on the banner and graduation announcements. It will be “Class of 2012 - More than just memories.”

The Marquette yearbook partners with Prestige Portraits for senior pictures. In order to be included in the yearbook, your portrait must be taken by Prestige before December 2^nd, 2011. All seniors must have their picture taken at Prestige in order to be included in the yearbook. A small sitting fee will be charged, but you do not have to order additional pictures from Prestige. Congratulations

Big congratulations go out to the Junior Leadership Group that was awarded a scholarship for their work on the Staff v. Senior Volleyball Game to raise money for Friends of Kids with Cancer.

ACT opportunity April 2nd

I wanted to make sure you were aware of an opportunity available to your students. Marquette Renaissance and Sylvan will be offering a practice ACT test on Saturday, April 2^nd.

A $10 registration fee buys:

· A genuine ACT test in a real testing situation

· Results back the same week, along with the test book so they can review their mistakes

· Valuable gifts from Sylvan, including a “getting into college” 4-year planning guide

So this is a great deal for the students, plus 100% of that $10 fee goes to Marquette Renaissance.

The deadline to register for the practice ACT is March 29^th. Registration forms are available in all grade level offices and the guidance office.

Please take the Climate Survey

Rockwood invites parents and patrons to take the school climate survey. We want to know what you think about Rockwood schools. Tell us how we rate on these important issues:

School safety
School learning environment
Character education
Drug and alcohol prevention
Parent and community involvement

The survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete. Your feedback is important to us. Please answer honestly and as completely as you can. All responses are anonymous and individual respondents cannot be identified. The survey will close on Feb. 25.

Note for Parents with more than one child in a Rockwood school: For each child, please select one school and answer all questions consistently for the school site that you have selected. You may complete additional surveys for other school sites that your children may attend if you would like to do so.

ACT Preparation

As I am sure you are all aware the district is providing the ACT to all juniors on April 27^th. Now is the time to begin students prepping for this exam. When I was in Ferguson-Florissant I wrote the curriculum for our ACT Prep course. I think too often students and parent believe the ACT is a test of a student’s intelligence; therefore, like an IQ test, it can’t be studied for. The reality is that the ACT assesses reading speed and comprehension. Studying for the ACT can make a dramatic impact on a student’s score, and a higher score can lead to substantially different collegiate opportunities. The class Marquette provides is very cost effective, but you will find that several companies offer valuable ACT preparation as well. Marquette is very proud to have established a high ACT average of 24.5, which is 3 point above the national and state averages. I believe the junior class can continue to improve upon these results.

Rescheduled Senior Farwell Meeting

The Junior Class meeting is cancelled for Thursday, Feb. 3 due to the snow days, frigid temps, and numerous other rescheduled events. Please mark your calendars for the new meeting date Tues. Feb. 22 at 6:30 pm. Please come ready to get started with committees and picking a theme for our event.
