Rockwood students will trade in their suntan lotion and beach towels for hammers and brooms this spring break, while they help rebuild the greater New Orleans area, March 12 – 19.
More than 135 students, staff, parents and community members from all four Rockwood high schools will participate in the fourth annual Spring Break Senior Service trip to New Orleans, LA. They will be rebuilding homes and beautifying communities in areas that were destroyed by hurricanes in 2005 and 2008. The students will also be working with other volunteers to refurbish New Orleans schools that sustained some damage.
“This is a very rewarding opportunity and a positive alternative for our students to experience during spring break,” says Dr. Timothy Jones, senior class principal at Lafayette High School. “Students and staff from all four high schools will be working together, donating their time and energy to give back to those in need,” Dr. Jones adds.
The students participating are from Eureka, Lafayette, Marquette and Rockwood Summit High Schools. They will board two charter buses at 5:45 a.m. on Friday, March 12 and return home about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 19.
The Rockwood students will be assisting the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity, New Orleans Outreach, and the Pass Christian School District during their trip.
