Rockwood Parent Series: Educating About Teen Issues

Students today are faced with numerous challenges.  To help educate parents and the community, the Rockwood School District Guidance and Counseling Department in cooperation with the Rockwood Drug-Free Coalition presents a three-part series:

Help a Child: Save a Life; Supporting Suicide Safety in Schools, Tues., March 30, from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in the Eureka High School theater, 4525 Highway 109 in Eureka.  Join Rockwood’s Director of Guidance and Counseling Dr. Sharon Sevier and the Executive Director of Kids Under Twenty-One (KUTO), working to prevent adolescent suicide, to find out the warning signs of suicide, tactics for responding when signs are present, and information that can help parents help children.

Adolescent Depression; Suicide Awareness and Education, Tues., April 13 from 7– 8:30 p.m. at Rockwood South Middle School, 1628 Hawkins Rd. in Fenton.  Join Neal Penberthy and Marian McCord founders of CHADS Coalition, an organization with the mission to advance the knowledge and prevention of adolescence and suicide, and Rockwood’s Dr. Sevier as they discuss what all parents and community members need to know to help those around them who may suffer from depression.

21st Century Parenting; Present ~ Involved ~ Effective, Tues., April 27 from 7– 8:30 p.m. in the Crestview Middle School auditorium, 16025 Clayton Rd. in Ellisville.  Join Tom Michler, therapist with the Johnson/Michler Group, and Rockwood’s Dr. Sevier take an in-depth look at parenting skills.  This final presentation focuses on helping families with the prevention of teen depression.

“Nationally, 15 percent of students report considering suicide, and 7 percent report having attempted it,” says Dr. Sevier.  “It’s the third-leading cause of death for youth under 24 years of age, but parents can help through awareness and education,” Dr. Sevier adds.

Parents and Rockwood community members are invited to come together to experience this educational three-part series.
