Aspiring Scientists Complete STARS Research Program
Five Rockwood students were among a group of 80 selected to participate in an intensive six-week research project with professionals and professors at the University of Missouri, St. Louis (UMSL).  During the Students and Teachers as Research Scientists Program (STARS), students gained hands-on experience as they completed research alongside of scientists.  In addition to conducting research, students attended lectures by nationally recognized scientists, were informed about the process for applying to higher education institutions, and enjoyed social activities such as bowling, a movie, an ice cream social and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game.

The students and their research projects are as follows:

  • Jacob Cohen, Marquette High School, “Correlation of Molecular Docking and Cytotoxicity Assay as a Powerful Tool for Assessment of MDR1 P-glycoprotein (Pgp/ABCB1) Recognition Profiles for Chemotherapeutics.”
    Dr. Vijay Sharma, Washington University
  • Felipe d'Andrea, Lafayette High School, “Characterization of EDC/NHS and DMTMM Activated Self-Assembled Monolayers and Glycoprotein-Lectin Interactions on Nanoporous Gold via Thermogravimetric Analysis.”
Dr. Keith Stine, University of Missouri-St. Louis
  • Jerik Leung, Lafayette High School, "The Effects of Lipids on KirBac1.1 Tetramer Stability.”
Dr. Decha Enkvetchakul, Saint Louis University
  • Alan Lu, Lafayette High School, “A Methyltransferase Potentially Involved in the Galanthamine Biosynthetic Pathway in Narcissus pseudonarcissus.”
Dr. Toni Kutchan, Donald Danforth Plant Science Center
  • Vivek Vallurupalli, Lafayette High School, “Influence of Ataxia Telangiesctasia Mutated  (ATM) on the Function of the Glut1 Transporter and Corresponding Effect on Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) Production.”
Dr. Jonathan Fisher, Saint Louis University
