Rockwood Report: Adequate Yearly Progress

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released the results of Spring 2010 MAP testing. This information includes reports of adequate yearly progress (AYP) in meeting the state’s academic standards for all Missouri school districts.

Here are three things you need to know about Rockwood’s results:

  1. Overall, Rockwood students are performing well above state and national levels in all content areas on all major measures of student academic performance. The 2010 MAP scores for the “all students” subgroup in our district continue to exceed AYP performance targets. Rockwood students scored 20.7 percentage points higher than the state average in communication arts and 18.3 percentage points higher than the state average in mathematics.

  2. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, Rockwood is considered a school district “in need of improvement.” Why did the district receive this designation? Because in order to make AYP, the aggregate (all students) in up to ten subgroups must meet proficiency goals. If the test scores of a single subgroup did not meet the performance targets established by the federal government, a school and the district fails AYP. This is what happened in Rockwood with the Spring 2010 MAP test. Some subgroups of students did not meet that NCLB goal. The district did not meet AYP for four consecutive years, and is now considered “in need of improvement.”

  3. This news can be confusing to parents because Rockwood students’ overall scores tend to be higher than the state average and are improving. Rockwood continues to be fully accredited, and the district is annually recognized with Missouri’s Distinction in Performance with High Achievement.

What happens now? According to federal guidelines, Rockwood must send a letter that explains NCLB and the progress the district is making to meet the goals.

You can read a letter from Dr. Bruce Borchers, Rockwood Superintendent, about recently released AYP results for Rockwood.
