In an effort to encourage correct recycling habits, schools across the Rockwood School District compete in the “Simply Recycle” contest. Each semester, the school that collects the most pounds of recycled material per capita and the school that demonstrates the most improvement over 4.5 pounds per student receives a $500 award.
For the spring 2010 contest, Babler Elementary won the most pounds per capita award having collected more than 15 pounds of recycled material per student. Ellisville Elementary increased its recycling efforts by 154 percent and was awarded most improved. QSR Recycling will present the awards to the schools this month.
“Congratulations are in order for all schools that continually do the right thing and recycle what they can, where they can,” said Susanne Reed of QSR Recycling.
Approximately 819,029 pounds of recycled material, or 36.42 pounds per student, was collected during the 2009-10 school year. “The Simply Recycle contest has done an excellent job of motivating students and staff to make a conscious effort to recycle,” said Bill Sloan, director of purchasing for Rockwood.
