 Kindergarten Program FAQs

Q: As a kindergarten parent, how do I register my child for school? View Answer
Answer:
All student registration is arranged at the local school level.
Kindergarten registration for the 2012-13 school year will be at every Rockwood elementary school on Feb. 1-2Application forms for the kindergarten program are online

To register for full-day kindergarten, parents must complete supplemental forms, which are available at each school.  In addition, a $300 non-refundable application fee will be due to the schools by Feb. 21 for full-day kindergarten.

To determine school assignment, please refer to attendance zone maps: For further assistance, please contact Connie Moehlenhoff at moehlenhoffconnie@rockwood.k12.mo.us
or 636-733-2105.
Q: How is full-day kindergarten different from half-day kindergarten? View Answer
Answer:
Full-day kindergarten offers students the same curriculum as the half-day option. Students who participate in full-day kindergarten will follow the same class format as students in grades 1-5. They will have 60 minutes of art and music and 150 minutes of Physical Education each week.
Q: How much is the tuition for the 2012-2013 full-day program? View Answer
Answer:
The cost is $332.50 per month for 10 months to be paid by electronic withdrawals beginning Aug. 3. There is also a $300 application fee. Including the application fee, the annual cost is $3,625.
Q: Why is Rockwood charging tuition for the optional full-day kindergarten program when some other school districts do not? View Answer
Answer:
Most of the school districts that do not charge tuition for full-day kindergarten receive more money from the state funding formula than Rockwood does. In some of these districts, the state is actually funding their full-day kindergarten programs.  In addition, other school districts have passed tax increases to help fund a full-day kindergarten program.
Q: What will be the class size for kindergarten classes? View Answer
Answer:
Rockwood follows its guidelines for elementary class sizes for kindergarten classes.
Q: What if the number of applications for the program exceeds the maximum enrollment for a class? View Answer
Answer:
If there are enough students for two classes of full-day kindergarten, we will open a second class. If there are not enough students for two classes, or if the number exceeds the maximum for two classes, a random drawing from all registrations received at the school will be held.
Q: What happens after the random drawing is conducted? View Answer
Answer:
The week following the drawing, a letter of acceptance or non-selection will be mailed to all parents who applied. If the registrant's name was not selected, the parents have three options:
  • The option to enroll in the half-day program and have the $300 refunded.
  • The option to participate in the Limited Choice program in a school where space is available; however, parents will provide transportation.
  • The option to be put on a waiting list for full-day kindergarten at their school, in case there is an opening before the beginning of school. The $300 registration fee will be held in case space becomes available.
Q: How does Limited Choice work for this program? View Answer
Answer:
If the number of Limited Choice applications exceeds the number of spaces available, there will be another random drawing conducted by the elementary executive office.

Parents who choose to be put on the waiting list will be placed on the list in the order their number was chosen in the random drawing on March 30. Their $300 application fee will be held in case they are chosen and subsequently refunded if they are not.
Q: When are the Limited Choice Applications due? View Answer
Answer:
Limited Choice Applications, which are available at each school's office are due March 14. Applications should be returned to the building principal of the building where parents are requesting their children attend.
Q: Will Adventure Club be available for students who attend full-day kindergarten? View Answer
Answer:
Yes. Parents will have the option to enroll students in Adventure Club before and/or after school.
Q: What is the difference between Adventure Club and full-day kindergarten? View Answer
Answer:
Full-day kindergarten is a curriculum based program taught by a certified kindergarten teacher.

Adventure Club has a constructive, play-based curriculum delivered by non-certificated staff.
