Curriculum
The fifth grade curriculum is very diverse. Fifth graders study everything from Colonial America to the far reaches of outer space. Several special projects enhance our science curriculum. Science topics include: electricity, space, scientific method, cells/organisms, and astronomy.
The past is brought alive through our study of American history. A highlight is Colonial America Day, which includes a rope maker, a Revolutionary War soldier and fifer, a quilter, musicians, and other colonial activities. Plays and visits from Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers help us to better understand our country’s past. This understanding is also aided through our study of geography, government, and historical fiction.
Historical fiction is an important genre study in fifth grade. Other genres that most fifth graders read include: realistic fiction about survival in the wilderness, fantasy, and science fiction. By combining literature with writing, fifth graders are able to expand their communication skills.

Special Events
Fifth graders at Ridge Meadows have the opportunity to participate in many special events and activities. Several fifth graders show their talents through Special Chorus and Orchestra. All fifth graders participate in the DARE program and the Challenges and Transitions activities including: golfing and bowling. Each spring, there is a visit to the middle school each student will attend, as well as an opportunity to participate in the track meet. A long anticipated event is the 5th grade Celebration. 5th grade students are finally "in charge" of other students for Roadrunner Recreation Day. Fifth grade is indeed an exciting place to grow and a fun place to learn.
