Baby, It's Cold Outside!

As the weather turns colder, please be sure to have your child dress appropriately for outdoor recess.  Please clearly mark your child’s name in all coats, gloves and hats in case they are misplaced, which allows us to return the item to your child.  Thanks for helping to keep our children warm and healthy!

We abide by the Rockwood School District guidelines for outdoor recess during extreme temperatures.   The following guidelines have been developed by factoring in the wind chill and heat indexes:

BELOW 20 degrees stay inside

20 - 32 degrees - 10 to 15 minutes outside

33 - 90 degrees - normal time

91 - 100 degrees - 10 minutes outside

Above 101 degrees - stay inside

Spreading Smiles
Inspired by the artist Bren Bataclan, our students are sharing smiles with old friends, new friends, neighbors and family members...the sky is the limit.  Mr. Bataclan felt that people didn't smile at one another enough or look at each other in the eyes anymore and he was motivated to change that.  He created whimsical characters with HUGE smiles to spread joy and happiness.  He would leave these masterpieces on park benches with a note affixed- This painting is yours if you promise to smile at random people more often.  Now, people across the world are participating in the Smile Project and his gallery shows are selling out.

Take your child's lead and be the one to smile first!  We hope it will bring joy to your life making others feel good and keep you smiling all day long!  Special thanks to our amazing art teacher, Linda Sachs, for sharing the story and starting a mini-smile project in the foyer at Ridge Meadows.  When you have a chance, ask your child to show you his/her smile project work of art that will surely raise the corners of your mouth!  A sneak peek.....

Back in Action
We have had a marvelous start to the school year.  Our students came in with a lot of excitement and energy to begin the 2011-12 school year.  We have allowed parents to assist children into classes and throughout this week, parents are welcome to escort students directly to the classroom.  Starting Monday, parents should begin the regular routine of allowing students to ride the bus or be dropped off in the parent drop off lane.  There are adults throughout the building that can assist any child in need of help getting to class or just wanting a friendly face to accompany them to class.  This will allow students to gain independence navigating the building and build responsibility with the morning routine at school.  Thanks for helping us make this the start of a fantastic year; we couldn't do it without your partnership!
Welcome back!
Have you ever gone to your favorite restaurant to find that your favorite menu item was no longer being offered?  I have, and as a picky eater, I found myself disappointed but then comes the excitement around a new adventure to find something different to enjoy.  Sometimes, my choice becomes my new favorite.  Change.  It happens all of the time and is usually greeted with an emotional response.  Some change is temporary, others are more long lasting.

Your 2011-12 teachers will be announced soon and I hope the change in a new school year greets you with enthusiasm and interest as to what lies before you on your journey of learning.  We are so excited to begin another fabulous year with our Roadrunners and looking forward to seeing your smiling face on August 17th for our first day of school.  Please be sure to check our website calendar for important events and announcements throughout the school year!
