As part of an appreciation event held for Vietnam veterans on Jan. 19, students at Rockwood South Middle School and Rockwood Summit High School made 1,000 paper cranes to thank those that have served our country and offer peace. The project was initiated by seventh-grade academic stretch students. While folded origami cranes symbolized a hope for peace after World War II, today the practice of folding 1,000 paper cranes represents a form of healing and hope during challenging times.
During the appreciation event, students thanked veterans for their service and shared their knowledge about this time in history. For many of the veterans who attended the event, this was the first time that they were thanked for their service and welcomed home. The colorful origami cranes are on display at Rockwood South Middle School.
