Welcome Class of 2016
We enjoyed hosting our incoming freshmen from Rockwood South today.  What a great group!  We hope that they are as excited as we are about having them at Summit in the fall!
A great day at Summit!

While our juniors took the ACT, our freshmen participated in activities designed to get them thinking about what kind of mark they want to make on Summit in their four years here.  It was fun to watch our students respond to the confident student speakers from Stanton Elementary who ran the “Leader in Me” assembly.  I’m looking forward to the impact that the class of 2015 will make at Summit over the next three years.

Our sophomores participated in a college and career fair.  They were so professional all dressed up and engaged in the day, taking full advantage of their opportunity to learn from the business professionals and college speakers.  Our students impressed the visitors.

Our seniors had a great time at their field day.  Some said that it was the highlight of their four years here.  None of these experiences could be possible without every Summit staff member, parent volunteers and help of staff members from Stanton, Rockwood South, and Crestview.  Great day!

Academic Pep Assembly

The Academic Pep Assembly was an amazing display of talent, support, and school spirit.  While the musical acts are entertaining and the accomplishments of our students are impressive, I also enjoy watching our kids interact with each other in the audience.  Times like these make me fell so lucky to be at Summit.

Senior Spring Break Service Trip

Mr. Oglesby and I had the pleasure of going to New Orleans with 17 of our seniors and 3 of our parents to work with Habitat for Humanity.  It was a great trip for the kids.  They got to work side-by-side with seniors from the other three high schools.  I was so impressed with their attitudes.  They smiled and just did whatever needed to be done.  They learned to dig, to build concrete forms, to hang siding, to install insulation, to paint, to frame walls, to clean up their mess, etc.  They also learned that this was not glamorous work! They learned about Habitat for Humanity and how the charity works.  They learned about the cost of living and the impact of a disaster.  Over 80,000 properties in New Orleans were blighted in Hurricane Katrina.  A little over 40,000 have been rebuilt or repaired.  There is still a lot of work there and a lot of reminders of that disaster from 7 years ago.

It was a great trip for me, personally.  I learned those things, too.  But what I really got a chance to learn was what great kids we have at Summit.  I already knew this, of course, but I really enjoyed living with our kids on a daily basis and seeing what great people they are first hand.  Our kids take care of each other and make sure that everyone is included.  They are such a pleasure to work with.

Seeking feedback

In an effort to begin to get to know the RSHS community, I’d like to seek feedback from you. By sharing your answers with me, I hope that I can learn what it means to part of the Summit Family by understanding what you truly value. I would like to know

1. What sets RSHS apart and makes us unique? (What do we do here that makes us proud?)

2. What do we want to strive toward? (What do we want to become?)

3. What commitments are we prepared to make to each other? To every student in our school? To every member of our school community? (What do we value?)

I plan to capture these responses and look for themes to guide the work of our administrative team as we begin to plan for next year. Feel free to share your responses with me by commenting on this blog, via e-mail at trotierrenee@rockwood.k12.mo.us or by turning this sheet into Barb Mennel in the main office.   Thanks so much for your time on behalf of our students. I look forward to working with you.
