2009 Rockwood Summit graduate, Bethanny Buell, finished third in the women’s pole vault during the NCAA Track and Field Championships on Wednesday at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Buell cleared 14 feet, 5½ inches, a personal-best vault. Buell, the Missouri Class 4 state champion in 2008 and 2009, chose South Dakota in large part because of Miles, a world-class vaulter who finished seventh in the 2004 Athens Olympics and fourth in Beijing in 2008.
Buell’s progress has gone a long way toward confirming the potential South Dakota women’s pole vault coach Derek Miles saw in her three years ago.
“When I saw her jump in high school, she had a lot of power and a pretty good technique,” Miles said. “I knew I didn’t have to reinvent the wheel with her. If you told her to change something, she could make an immediate adjustment. Some vaulters don’t have the ability to do that.
