The Colonial Period

The Teaching American History Grants program for the 5th grade teachers in the Parkway and Rockwood school districts provides the teachers with an opportunity to study the Colonial Period of American history. Teachers will study the Understanding by Design Model for unit and lesson design as the first event of the program. Teachers will prepare for their experience in Colonial Williamsburg with the assistance of Dr. Ted Green for Webster University.

After the experience at Colonial Williamsburg, the teachers will design unit and lesson plans to be incorporated into their teaching to increase student knowledge and understanding of the Colonial Period. Teachers will also learn innovative teaching strategies from History Alive! And Teacher Created Materials to enhance the teaching and learning of American history.

Teachers will also have the opportunity to learn about slavery in the colonial period as the study with a scholar from the Organization of American Historians. After the three year program, the teachers will have additional knowledge and skills to promote the study of American history in their classroom.
