Third grade teachers will study the history of immigration in America with Dr. Laura Westhoff of UMSL. Teachers will analyze why people move, the effect of movement, and the extent movement impacts the story of America. Working with Dr. Westhoff, teachers will study immigration in St. Louis and participate in the Angel Island experience with the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation.
In the third year, teachers will travel to New York City to visit the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Tenement House Museum. Throughout the school year teachers will participate in book studies and incorporate the concepts into their classrooms. Teachers will share their expertise in a culminating social studies mini-conference.
