Science
- Topics covered: Solar System, Magnetism, Electricity, Senses, Bones, Muscles, Micro-Organisms, Plants, Animals
- Emphasis: Visual (Textbook, other written resources), Audio-visual (Technology- Laser Disc, filmstrips, films, videos, micro-projector), Experimental (microscope, models, laboratory equipment, computer)
Social Studies
- Topics covered: Discovery, Exploration, Colonization, The American Revolution, The New Nation, Western Expansion, The Civil War
- Emphasis: Visual (Textbook and other written resources), Audio-visual (Laser disc, filmstrips, videos, films, tapes, computer), Application (Kaleidoscope, map studies, computer, special projects)
Spelling
- Topics covered: Core Words from High Frequency List, Fifth Grade Book Words, Challenge Words, Topical Words
- Emphasis: Leveling as determined by placement test, transfer of correct spelling to written work
Reading/Language
- Topics covered: Reading: Elements of Literature, vocabulary skills, comprehension skills, legends, Fairy Tales, Historical Fiction (accomplished through the use of basals, picture books, literature books, SRAs, videos, filmstrips). Language: grammar skills, expository writing, research papers, 5 paragraph essay, creative writing, punctuation skills, research skills, library skills (accomplished using videos, filmstrips, textbook, computer, other written resources)
- Emphasis: Vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar skills; and fluency in writing
Communication Communication between home and school will come in many forms, including:
- the Viking Voice
- the daily assignment book
- the classroom newsletter
- notes and phone calls when necessary.
Each student will be given a Viking folder. These folders will come home during the week filled with your student's graded work, the newsletter and any fliers from the office or PTO. Please look over your student's accomplishments, and keep all other papers before returning the folder to school.
