Science/Social Studies

In kindergarten, the best way to teach science and social studies is to integrate the instruction into language arts and math lessons. Some of the social studies themes that we touch on in kindergarten include families, friendship, safety, community and cultural celebrations. Some of the science topics include seasons weather, animals, plants, and the five senses.

Language Arts

Our language arts program consists of the following components:
Reading to children: We read at least one book aloud to the class each day. "Read aloud" time leads into discussions about characters, plot, authors, vocabulary, and much, much more!

Reading by children: As the year progresses, children are encouraged to read books independently. They begin with patterned texts and books with many picture clues. We also make many books in class. These child-made books contain basic sight words, repetitive text, and simple words. As these books are sent home, you can create a special "library" at your house to store them! Encourage your child to read to people who visit your home. This will give your child a great feeling of pride!

Literacy Centers: Children will work in small groups at literacy centers each week. Activities such as listening, writing, and letter/sound recognition take place in literacy centers. Poems, songs, charts and rhymes are also integral pieces of literacy centers.

Small Group Work: We use this instructional time to work with 6 or fewer students at once. This is invaluable time used to work closely with students at their individual levels. Small group lessons are explicitly taught and students are given time to practice newly acquired skills.
