Uthoff Valley is fortunate to have so many excellent teachers. But even great teachers can't always ensure the success of all children. The Professional Learning Community (PLC) is a group of grade level teachers along with administrators, counselors, reading specialists, Special School District teachers, and other professionals who meet approximately once a month to discuss the progress of individual students. It works under the assumption, "Two heads are better than one. "
When a teacher has concerns about a particular student, the teacher meets with the PLC TEAM to discuss the student's progress. Items to be considered in writing an action plan for the student are the:
- Child's academic needs,
- Child's social needs,
- Child's emotional needs.
This action plan may make recommendations such as:
- Classroom interventions,
- Curriculum modifications,
- Assessment by the school nurse,
- Counseling at school,
- Referral to the school social worker.
The PLC TEAM may recommend testing by the Special School District if they feel the child has displayed any of the following:
- Learning disability,
- Speech or language impairments,
- Emotional disturbances,
- Other...
On occasions the team may recommend that the parent consider a referral to an outside agency.
The PLC TEAM is just one way that we try to meet the needs of our students.
