WESTRIDGE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Are you ready to get involved in your child’s school? As part of the Westridge Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) you are encouraged to become active in the Westridge community. This informational packet details the many Committees that require our help. Please take the following steps to volunteer:

Step 1) Review committee descriptions, time commitment, and volunteer location to determine the areas you would like to volunteer. Please feel free to contact the committee chair if you have any questions.

Step 2) Complete the PTO Volunteer Opportunities Form by checking all areas in which you are interested.

Step 3) Return the form to school with your child.

Activity Key:

Volunteer opportunities can be fulfilled, partially or completely, from home – day or evening.

Volunteer opportunities can be fulfilled, partially or completely, outside of school hours.

Volunteer opportunities can be fulfilled at school, during school hours.

DATE SPECIFIC COMMITTEES

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS

Committee processes and distributes orders in August. A detail-oriented daytime position with variable time commitment.

FALL FAMILY NIGHT

Committee will plan and assist with the Fall Family Night, a free event that provides Westridge families a chance to be together.

DIRECT DONATION DRIVE

Starting with the 2010-2011 school year the fall and spring food fundraisers are being replaced with a direct donation program.  This is new and in response to surveys showing a strong preference among parents.

GRADUATION-5th grade

Committee will decorate, set up, serve refreshments, and clean after the 5th grade promotion ceremony.  This is an evening event scheduled in May with a time commitment of approximately 3 hours from setup to completion. The committee is chaired by 5th grade parents, but we would like 4th grade parents to serve on the committee and actually volunteer during graduation.

GRADUATION-KINDERGARTEN

Committee will decorate, set up, serve refreshments, and clean after the Kindergarten Graduation. This is a daytime event scheduled in May with a time commitment of approximately 3 hours from set-up to completion.

● ►HEAD ROOM PARENT

Each Head Room Parent will plan and coordinate volunteers for two classroom parties in their child’s classroom. Parties are scheduled in October and February Planning and coordination time requirements will vary, but can be done from home. The parties are one hour events held during the school day.

● ►HOSPITALITY-STAFF APPRECIATION

Committee will organize PTO food donations, set-up, serve, and clean after the staff back to school breakfast, fall/spring conference dinners, and fall/spring book fair teacher preview snacks. Committee members can choose to provide a dish with a minimal time investment and/or staff one of the events for a time commitment of approximately 2 ½ hours.

● ►HOSPITALITY-WELCOMING

Committee will set-up, serve, and clean after the Kindergarten Orientation and First Morning Muffins in August and Kindergarten Kick-Off in May. Each event is a time commitment of approximately 2 hours.  Staffing all three events is not a requirement of this committee; we welcome your availability for just one.

MARKET DAY

Committee helps unload the delivery truck, distribute the food and make reminder telephone calls.  Staffing every month is not a requirement of this committee; we welcome your availability for just one two-hour event.

READING STORE

Committee will set-up and staff the quarterly store for students who reach their Accelerated Reader goal, help students with reward selections, and run activities for 4th and 5th grade students. Each Reading Store is a daytime event with a time commitment of 2 ½ to 3 hours. The 4th and 5th grade reward activities are a 1½ hour commitment. Staffing every reading store is not a requirement of this committee; we welcome your availability for just one.

● ►SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

Committee will set-up, staff, and pack up books for the Fall Book Fair and Spring Book Fair. Shifts are scheduled in 2 hours increments from 8:00am-8:00pm.

SPRING CARNIVAL SHIFT VOLUNTEER

Volunteers needed to work a shift in one of various areas at our Spring Carnival scheduled in May.

● ►VARIETY SHOW

Committee will plan, organize, and execute a school-wide talent show. The Variety Show has a day and evening performance scheduled in April.

ON-GOING COMMITTEES

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION/FREE MONEY

Committee trims and counts box tops and researches other “free money” options.

WE CARE-MEALS

Committee helps Westridge families in times of special need by providing and delivering meals. This committee is under the direction of our school counselor. Cooking for your own family? Why not double it and provide for a Westridge family that needs our help.

STAFF LED COMMITTEES

ART VOLUNTEER – teacher, Colleen McNealy

Volunteers will assist our Westridge art program by hanging artwork in the hallways and display cases, helping in the classroom, and help prepare art projects for the students.

COUNSELOR AIDE – counselor, Theresa Rose

Counselor aides have the opportunity to take pictures for Spotlight Students, Help with Bulletin Boards, Red Ribbon Week, Bully Free Week, and various other activities planned through out the year.

LIBRARY VOLUNTEER – librarian, Anne Reed

Volunteers assist with shelving and processing books, labeling, checkout and student research in the school library. Training is provided and any assistance will be appreciated.

MUSIC VOLUNTEER – teacher, Rob Miller

Volunteers help make the children dazzle by assisting with their programs, props, costumes, etc.

CLASSROOM VOLUNTEER your child’s teacher

Volunteers provide support to students and teachers in areas determined by the classroom teacher.

● ►SCIENCE FAIR – teacher, Molly Clince

Volunteers are needed to check-in projects and to judge the finished projects.

● ►RELAY FOR LIFE – teacher, Cheryl Skrivan

Volunteers needed to help organize parent and student teams for Westridge’s participation in the Relay for Life in May.
