Welcome Mrs. O'Day

Wild Horse would like to welcome Mrs. Sharon O’Day as our interim assistant principal for the remainder of the 2011-2012 school year.  I have known Sharon for over 20 years as she worked in Rockwood as an administrator at Ballwin, Westridge and Chesterfield Elementaries.  I am thrilled to be working with her again!  Mrs. O’Day just retired in July of last year, so she is still current with the policies and practices of the Rockwood School District.  Please take a moment to say hello to Mrs. O'Day!

Here is her family!

Here is her dog, Bogey!  I think my Quincy would enjoy playing with Bogey!

A Special Community!

Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to make or purchase goodies to share with our staff.  Above is the awesome spread that was set thanks to your generosity.  The staff and I would like to thank you for thinking of us with our gift of cookies!  We feel very fortunate to be surrounded by such wonderful parents!

We hope you enjoy your Holidays!
An Honor to Represent!
This past Monday and Tuesday, I was honored to represent Wild Horse in Washington DC at the White House.  YES - the real White House.  Several Rockwood schools were being recognized for achieving the Healthier US Challenge.  This is a special award for meeting very specific criteria of keeping students moving while also making sure that they eat healthy.  Many thanks to our PE staff and our Cafe staff for putting our application together.

Since I was making the trip by myself, I decided to invite my 83 year old mother to join me.  I though she would get a kick out of going to the White House.  We spent 3 days in DC and with the help of a double decker bus, many taxis and a few wheel chairs....my mom was able to see just about everything in DC.  Her biggest thrill was, "to put her feet on the White House lawn!"  It was a very special trip!

Mrs. Obama greeted all of us in attendance and then came down to shake hands.  I was not close enought to shake hands, but I did get several close pictures!

The MLK Memorial was dedicated on Sunday while we were there.  Although we were unable to attend, we witnessed all of the activity from afar and the many people who came for this special ceremony.  We even saw Jesse Jackson at Union Station!
Remodel Complete
So sorry for the delay in posting the finished pics of the kitchen.  The last 4 weeks have been very busy.  Yes - the work is complete and the kitchen is fabulous.  Now if I could just remember where everything is!

Before...

After...

What a Generous Community
I wanted to say thank you to all of you who have been so generous in your giving to the PTO One Check campaign.  I have had several of you say that you LOVE just writing a check vs the selling of products to friends and neighbors.

Several of you have also taken advantage of the company matches - thus you double your contribution to our school.  Some of you have even pursued this match even though your company was not listed on the original list sent home.  Thanks for thinking outside of the box for our school!

As of today, we have had donations from about 75 of our Stallion Families totally around $9,000.  Our goal is to raise at least $14,000, so we are well on our way to reaching our goal.  If you have not yet made a donation, I encourage you to click on the link below and print off your paperwork you need.  We truly appreciate your support!

Duty Calls
Since the first day of school, I have had the honor of doing recess duty with our second grade Stallions!  I have had so much fun watching them play - like they don't have a care in the world.  I thought that we could all use a 20 minute recess from our job to go out and play!

I have groups of children that always play the same activity.  Others go from group to group trying new games.  I have just a couple of rules during recess.  They know they need to be nice to each other and that they have to be active during recess.  I always say, "I want to see you using your muscles!"  They truly have been doing a great job outside!
Wild Horse Recognized!!!

As part of the National Schools of Character program, the Character Education Partnership (CEP) recognizes annual Promising Practices by schools and districts in the United States and elsewhere that implement unique and specific strategies in character education.   I am proud to announce that Wild Horse has been recognized as one of the 2011 Promising Practices for our ‘Neigh’borly Café with Reservation Seating.

The “Neigh”borly Café provides the opportunity for students to foster positive social interactions while demonstrating respect and inclusion for all students in the café. Each month, students make new friends and get to know other classmates through reserved seating. The “Neigh”borly Café ensures that all students are included and not left without a place to sit at lunch. Ultimately, students feel a stronger sense of belonging and contribute to a more positive school climate.

Although this practice was an adjustment for both our little and big Stallions, I have been proud of the strong character that our families have shown in supporting the reservation seating.  It really shows that we believe that our school belongs to ALL children and that every child has gifts and talents to be shared with others.

P.S.  Sorry for the delay in my posting.  We are in week 4 of the kitchen remodel and I think I am doing well to try to keep my school life a bit in order...given that my home is a construction zone!  Here is an updated pic!  We are now just waiting for the countertop before the rest can be completed!

Rainbow Wishes!
I loved that our Monday began with a beautiful rainbow in the sky.  I take that as a wonderful sign that we will have an awesome week!

We will continue to practice all of our emergency drills this week.  It is important that we do this so that students are ready.  Students will also begin taking some assessments so that we can see just how smart they are and plan instruction appropriate for their continued growth.

I am tickled at how well our morning drop off is going.  Many, many, many thanks for putting your students on the bus.  This ensures that they arrive on time for learning and it keeps our car traffic to a minimum.  I do want to remind you of our tardy policy as outlined in our parent handbook.

Wild Horse Tardy Policy

It is an expectation at Wild Horse that learning begins on time.  Our school day begins promptly at 8:23 a.m. with school announcements.  All school doors are secured at 8:23 and admittance to school after this time requires the use of the buzzer system.  Any child who arrives after the announcements have begun, or the doors have been secured is considered tardy and must stop in the school office to receive a tardy pass to enter class.  A pattern of chronic tardiness will result in the following actions:

  • After five (5) days of tardiness per year, a letter of notification will be sent home from school to the parents/guardians.

  • After ten (10) days of tardiness per year, a second letter of notification will be sent home from the school informing the parents/guardian that they must park their car in our parking lot and check their child in at the front office.  The child will not be sent to class until the parents/guardian checks them in at the office.

  • After fifteen (15) days of tardiness per year, a social worker referral will be made so they may contact the family to offer support and/or resources.
End of the Week
Wow!  I cannot stop smiling!  We have had a wonderful start to our 2011-12 school year.  Sure there were the few glitches like the traffic lights blinking the first day, a few late buses...but overall our first 3 days were AWESOME!

This year our Caring School Community Committee created video segments to show our students the expectations for behavior on the bus, in the hallway and in the cafeteria.  Teachers showed these this week and held a class meeting with their students to discuss these expectations.  Already, I can see a difference that this has made.  As I walk the hallways, I always remind students that I am looking for behavior just like what they saw on the movie!  I think it is terrific that we continue to find ways to use technology to make our school a better place for learning!

I have also had the honor of doing recess duty with two of our grade levels.  I love watching our students play and enjoy the fresh outdoors (okay it has been a bit hot!) after learning all morning.

I will admit though, that this weekend has come just in time!  This week has seemed to last 14 days.  It is hard to believe that we just had Meet the Teacher on Monday.  I have already warned my husband that he is on dog walking duty in the morning - because I am sleeping in!!

I hope you and your family have an enjoyable weekend!

P.S.  Update on the kitchen project.....the floor is in and the cabinets are being installed.  Hoping for the countertop people to come on Monday to measure for the cutouts.  I hope to have more pics next week of the progress!
