The Woerther Physical Education and Health Department is devoted to promoting health-enhanced fitness. We hope we can instill within each child the values of an active and healthy lifestyle. We believe by working with the parents, other educators and the community we can accomplish this goal!
At Woerther Elementary, students in grades one through five have daily physical education classes. Kindergarten students meet twice a week. All students are provided an opportunity to participate in a variety of activities which help develop and improve their physical, social and intellectual potential.
Requirements
- All children must wear an appropriate athletic shoe for P.E. class. No platform shoes or shoes with heels.
- If your child is injured or ill, please send a note. (If your child will miss more than
3 days of P.E. due to medical reasons, please send a note from the doctor.)
- Students wearing dresses or skirts should wear shorts underneath for P.E. class.
- Students in grades 3-5 should have a health folder.
Tennis Shoes -- or Not?Can I wear these shoes in P.E. today? This seems to be the most asked question. We realize tennis shoes have become quite a fashion statement these days, and we're glad. However, we are concerned for our students' safety and injury prevention. We ask for basic "non-skid" tennis shoes with a level sole. If the shoe has a heel or a "platform," it is probably not a good choice for class. No boots, please! To get the best support, we recommend students tie or Velcro close their shoes. Slip-on shoes and shoes without laces give little or no support. A good question to remember when purchasing shoes is, "would I want to run a mile in these?" Or, "can I change directions easily?"
Remember, every day is a P.E. day, so every day is a Tennis Shoe Day!
If you have any questions or concerns regarding physical education or health classes and activities, please contact your child's physical education instructor. We look forward to working with you.
Turkey Trot
The Turkey Trot is a one-mile fun run for Grades 1-5 and is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4th (rain date November 6th). Students must predict the length of time they think they'll need to complete the one-mile course. The student who comes closest to their predicted time is the overall winner.
Track Meet
Woerther Elementary participated in the district track meet in May. We want to congratulate the Woerther Track Team. Everyone did an awesome job!
Cross-Country Track Meet
The Annual Fourth and Fifth Grade Meet will be held on the first Saturday in October at Marquette High School. Good luck to the Woerther runners.
Fitness Test
Each student in grades 1 to 5 takes the Fitness Gram Physical Fitness Test. The goal of the Fitness Gram is to provide students with opportunities to have fun while learning fitness concepts and participating in activities which enhance fitness levels. This also lets each student know their areas of strength and if they need to improve in any areas. Components covered are:
(1) aerobic capacity
(2) body composition
(3) muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility
This unit is covered in October with the fitness health lessons.
Heart Monitors
PTO has purchased four heart monitor sticks to be used during P.E. classes. The sticks allow the students to monitor their heart rate while exercising.
Did You Know?
The Surgeon General has determined that lack of physical activity is detrimental to your health.
People who are usually inactive can improve their health and well-being by becoming even moderately active on a regular basis.
Physical activity need not be strenuous to achieve health benefits.
A person can achieve greater health benefits by increasing the amount (duration, frequency or intensity) of physical activity.
